Facts about the Sister County affiliation between Dorchester County, Maryland and Düren County, Germany
History:
In 2011, the sister country affiliation, modeled on the 55 year old Sister Cities International program began by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, celebrates its 7th year.
Crabtoberfest:
This annual fall festival is held to honor Dorchester’s rich past and embrace positive growth and development of the sister county partnership for the future.
Student Exchange Program:
In an effort to share each county's most precious resource--its children--both counties have sponsored student exchange programs since 2005. Students from both counties enjoy a true cultural exchange while they are away. They reside with host families, attend host students' schools and tour the area. The experience gives the students an appreciation for the similarities and differences between the two counties.
Cultural Exchange Program:
In 2008 the two counties began an exchange of professional artists. Highly original work has been on display in Cambridge since 2008 and Dorchester artists have travelled to Düren County.
Business Expansion Program:
Since 2009, business representatives from both counties have been engaged in discussions and site visits to further the goal of measurable business expansion through the established sister county partnership. Opportunities have been identified for joint ventures, licensing agreements or distributorships in such sectors as corrugated boxing, alternative energy and seafood cultivation. Plans are underway for a Worker Exchange program to send representatives of banking, labor relations and hospitality industries to the respective sister counties for short term work assignments.
